Preparing for the CFP(R) Examination
How We Can Help
Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) Preparation Courses
The CFP® Certification Examination is one of the most difficult examinations in the financial services industry, therefore it is imperative to prepare for this exam with a rigorous review program. You may have heard from CFP® professionals they attended a four or five day review class to "bring it all together." Many will tell you that they could not pass without a review. But, what if there is no review class in your area or you do not want to be away from your office and home for an entire week? How can you get the benefits of a class without the costs and hassle? Our online review programs are your answer!
Online SchoolRoom is proud to offer a variety of review programs, provided by Keir Educational Resources, a 40 year old company with a long history of helping students pass the CFP® exam. We offer programs that include self study textbooks and other materials that you can use to prepare at your own pace, and a 32 hour online review course that includes text, audio, and interactive exercises. These materials are updated 3 times each year to reflect new laws that may be included in each examination administered by the CFP® Review Board.
Using these materials in partnership with materials from any CFP® Board registered program, a student can expect to enhance and streamline his or her study experience.
About the CFP® Certification Examination
The CFP® Certification Examination is administered 3 times per year (typically in the third Friday and Saturday in March, July and November) in 50 major metropolitan areas throughout the US. The examination lasts 10 hours, and is divided into one 4 hour session on a Friday afternoon, and two 3 hour sessions on Saturday. Candidates who wish to take this exam must register and pay about 6 weeks prior to the exam.
To enroll for the CFP Board Exam or for more details about the logistics of taking the CFP® Certification Examination, click here to visit the CFP Board website.
You can apply for the CFP® Certification Examination after you have successfully completed an acceptable course of study (or its equivalent). The educational coursework requirement can be met in several ways, including completing a CFP Board-Registered Program, completing equivalent coursework subject to CFP Board's transcript review process, or having one of the designations, credentials or degrees pre-approved by CFP Board. Candidates for certification must have a bachelor's degree, in any discipline, in order to obtain CFP® certification, but this does not have to occur before sitting for the exam or fulfilling the work experience.
For more details regarding the requirements for CFP® certification click here to receive the Guide to CFP® Certification from the CFP Board.
In this self study package, you will receive the following textbooks for the CFP® Certification Examination, including:
• A Two Volume Set of Comprehensive Review Books covering all 89 topics including application questions and prior exam questions.
• A Comprehensive Case Studies Book with cases on each of the core subject areas in addition to comprehensive cases and cases from prior exams. The cases and questions in this book were written specifically to help prepare candidates planning to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination. The questions accompanying each case have been written in the general formats used by the CFP Board. The first seven cases focus only on one of the seven subject areas tested on the CFP® Certification Examination. After each case fact pattern, we include five questions from each topic tested on the CFP Board's 89 Topics list. For example, the first case covers General Principles of Financial Planning, which includes Topics 1-14 on the CFP Board's list. The next eight cases are long, integrated cases that draw questions from all of these areas in connection with financial planning for one hypothetical family. Several of the cases are actually cases with questions that appeared on previous exams and are published with permission of the CFP Board. Answers and rationales are provided for all of our questions so that students can check their knowledge and ability to analyze the information in each case.
• A Guide to Your Financial Calculator textbook to help you with present value and future value calculations including the key strokes on the four most commonly used financial calculators (HP12C, HP10BII, HP17BII and BAII Plus). This book has recently been updated to include the HP 12C Platinum version as well as the new Victor V10 and Victor V12. The first chapter covers basic financial calculations and the second chapter covers more advanced financial calculations. The third chapter consists solely of practice problems with detailed answers and keystrokes for each calculator.
• A Four Volume Simulated Examination Book with a 10-hour mock exam to give you the experience of what it is like to take the actual examination. 10-hour mock exam to imitate the experience of the actual CFP® Certification Examination. The Simulated Examination consists of four booklets entitled Test Sessions. Test Sessions 1 requires four hours to complete. Test Session 2 and 3 are each scheduled for three hours for completion. This examination reflects the CFP Board's 89 Topic list. It is 285 questions - all multiple choice - just like the national examination.
